Sweden has Europe's most thirsty car

The newly registered cars in Sweden are efficient and emit less carbon dioxide than previously, it shows a recent survey. But compared with Europe, we are still bottom of the class.

Carbon dioxide emissions from new petrol and diesel cars in Sweden in 2008 fell by almost five percent and amounted to 173 grams per kilometer. This compares with the EU average of 158 grams (in 2007). It shows an index of new cars' carbon footprint, which today is presented by the Environmental Protection Agency, National Road Administration and the Consumer Agency.

- The high proportion of green cars help to reduce traffic impact on the climate, and gasoline and diesel cars are becoming more fuel efficient. We are still high compared to the rest of Europe, but it goes in the right direction, "says Carl Magnus Berglund, an analyst at the Consumer Agency.

Sweden has Europe's most fuel-guzzling car, and carbon dioxide emissions of new petrol and diesel cars are still among the highest. If the Swedish fleet in the long run would reduce emissions to an average of 120 grams per kilometer, which is the EU target, would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about five million tonnes, or almost eight per cent of Sweden's total greenhouse gas emissions.

Why are we so thirsty cars in Sweden?

- There is a long tradition of driving big cars in Sweden. Even if we go back to the eighties, we see that we have been at the top in terms of consumption. One explanation is that we soon got well off and were early with mass car ownership. Some blame the Volvo and Saab. But it's a bit like chicken and egg, "says Håkan Johansson, Environment Strategic Unit, SRA.

According to Håkan Johansson are no obvious differences between the densely populated cities and rural areas - to drive large cars are more to do with economics than necessary. Jämtland, for example, the most thirsty cars - along with Stockholm.

- We do not see long distances affect that we have such different vehicle fleet compared to other countries.

Free rental cars from Hertz

Affilliate Program is a new online service for booking a free rental cars. The drive to reduce the cost to Hertz Car Rental adds to the movement of rental cars.

On June 1, Hertz Car Rental is launching a new service for booking a free rental cars - Affilliate. Car Hire can be booked on envägssträckor between different locations, mainly in Sweden but also to and from destinations abroad, including Germany, Denmark and Holland. The investment will mainly reduce the cost to the company each year, adding to the transport of their rental cars.

- We spend millions of dollars annually to transport rental cars from rental agencies. Through Affilliate we solve logistical problems, while we have the opportunity to reach new customer groups. This is of course probably not the procedure of choice for business travelers, but now we get an opportunity to show young people such as practical and beneficial option is a rental car, "says Anders Tärnells, marketing at Hertz.

Affilliate Program is a web-based service, where rental cars can be booked free of charge between different cities, both Swedish and foreign. The service is open to all, as long as Hertz rules and conditions. Hertz has over 150 rental offices from Ystad in the south to Riksgränsen in the north and there will be rental cars available at various distances, with most emphasis on the cars to and from Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. Currently, these are a hundred cars every month.

Booking process is simple. The customer logs on Free Riders website www.hertzfreerider.se, select a car from the list of available cars, sets time for pickup and delivery, and click the "book" button. Then, just download and leave your car in a particular place within the specified time interval. Gasoline and car insurance for damage and theft are also included at no extra cost.

As one of the primary target audiences for the Free Rider is young, so Hertz also lowers the age limit to 19 years. At the same time help the company in the rules regarding payment, for example by accepting debit cards in more conventional vehicle categories.

- Unfortunately, our rules made it difficult for younger customers to rent a car from us. Therefore, our ambition and long-term strategy to align service and product offerings so that they better fit even young people, "says Anders Tärnells.

Affilliate open for booking rental cars for free on June 1 www.hertzfreerider.se

So you can travel free

The ability to run a free rental car between cities in Sweden and thus receive a free trip on short notice has become popular with car rental companies, Hertz and Budget car rental. Avis rental car auction also publishes travel.

Hertz, which is the market leader in the rental car market, launched its concept of "free riding" in June 2006.

It aims to cars hired needs to be run back the place it came from. On the Hertz site notifies you, and may indicate where the three favorite places you want to run from. Then you get a text message or an e-mail when it shows up a car that Hertz may have carried. It has become fashionable to get a free travel between two cities.

- We have 30 000 registered members who run the 5000 cars. It's free for the running, with the exception of a few destinations, "says Anders Tärnells, marketing at Hertz to Private Business.

Driving a car in this way acts as renting a car. The same rules apply regarding age, driving license and excess. You need to have Swedish driving license and had at least one year and be a Swedish citizen. The car is full tank and not enough thought, you have to pay the filling.

What you turn to?

- It is based on that you are flexible with their time so it is addressed to students and pensioners with low tide at checkout, "says Anders Tärnells.

How to set it up on short notice?

- Yes, you are subscribed to the destination you are interested in getting a free trip to. Some places may be open for one week before any biting. Most popular is to run between Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. During winter, Salen popular and Visby in the summer, "he says.

Unlike when you rent a car yourself you must run directly to the place of the car to be.

- The system automatically calculates the amount of time it takes to run the route. One should not run too much and must return the car within the time period calculated.

You are also responsible for the car in the same way as if you were to rent it yourself.

- We take the damage for the repair of the car within a certain ceiling.

Run the car for £ 1 plus petrol

A similar concept has free car rental firm Budget. Company pool called Budget's business concept aimed at small and medium-sized Nordic companies.

- Those business customers can run a car on a dime to and from Stockholm. There is an added benefit for our business customers. Almost daily, popped up a car that needs to be transported. There have been pieces of 30-40 vehicles per month since its inception a year ago, says Mr Lindberg, Director of the Budget car rental.

On the homepage you can see which cars need to run and will call you directly to the station where the car is in need of transport and the book.

- The conditions are no different from renting a car, with the difference that it costs a penny and you will be paying gasoline itself, "said Mr Lindberg.

You do not use the car for a mission to run it for free.

- Friends and children can use the service to those who have business card. For example if you have a son who is studying in Gothenburg and he may have to book a car and drive to Stockholm.

Avis rental cars auction

Avis, which is the second largest in the car rental market, has no free concept. But instead the emphasis is on auctioning.

- We have been auctioning cars via auction site Tradera when we had a lot of cars driven to a place. That we are currently evaluating how it has gone, but expects that the few weeks running the auctions again, "says Staffan Wikström, Sweden Manager at Avis.

Both Anders Lindberg Tärnells and Manuel warns that in the summer can be difficult to short notice, get a rental car, especially in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö and Nyköping (Skavsta Airport). It is the greatest pressure to hire a car in the summer and this year the extra pressure of car rental companies.

- Be in good time if you need a car this summer. There are already 30 per cent reservation and it depends on many factors. There are more people who travel to Sweden because of, among other things, the weak krona and more stay at home and Vacations in Sweden. If you are late it may be difficult to find a rental car. Stockholmers have poor foresight and one can not call the day before you're going. It is good to have a couple of weeks passed, "said Mr Lindberg.

- My advice is to book early this year before the summer holidays. There is great demand in metropolitan areas. Book your car at least a week before departure, "says Anders Tärnells.

Europcar, which is also a major player in the rental market has no "free driving concept".

RICKARD YDRENÄS, PRIVATE BUSINESS

Advice for those who "go free" this summer:

* Examine the car when you download it. You are responsible and liable for damages to the car not listed in the car injured binder. You may be liable for damages, loss, theft, furnishings, parking fines, speeding fines, and for many driven mil (for those who are free riders). At Hertz includes the following insurance policies for people who are running free (freeride): self-injury mitigation with trailer and car theft insurance. The excess is £ 2750 for car damage.
* Be aware of the excesses of youth. Are you over 25 years to the youth in excess of 1500 Hertz per injury.

No one is permitted to rent golf cart in Halmstad!

Radio Halland has a story today. The journalist knows that there probably is no golf club in Sweden who are permitted to car rental (which is needed for golf cart).

There are also some factual errors, where various laws such as the confused Proposed off-road vehicles and the law on car rentals. Has been granted an exemption for the disabled under Terrain Vehicle Act, that does not mean you automatically get rent out vehicles to handkappade. (Vehicle = terrain / terrain vehicle)

Fun in this context is that the County Board confuse two laws, first off-road vehicles Prohibition Act, and legislation authorizing the rental. Exemptions for disabled is under off-road ban law, permission to rent cars (golf carts are another team). This goes without saying that it is unreasonable laws about players, clubs, club management and the authorities can not be the law, also a law that nobody asked for or want.

Weekend Guide to Visby

It is winter, but the island of Gotland has not closed. Visby this time of year offers peace and mys. And the chance to julshoppa in peace.

Thursday

It takes 10 minutes (and costs about 140 SEK) by taxi from the airport and into the Medieval hotel (0498-29 12 30), which lies just inside the ring wall Norder Port. Install yourself in the room in 1300-century building (from about 1300 SEK / night in double room) and spend a few moments to land in peace.

Take a turn through town and stop by the cathedral. Check the facility - if you are lucky, it Nikodemusmässa with much music and maybe tell the priest Mats Hermansson, who made a reputation for extraordinary personal religious fabrications. Inside the church stands crib format.

There are no internet cafes in Visby, but if you want to take one last connection to the network, you can get a library card at the library and borrow a computer with up to two hours per day. Or skip the outside world and find a good restaurant instead. The company at the market square (0498-21 50 80) with French overtones kick start the weekend's dining experiences.

Friday

The portrait hangs in the hotel's concierge - painted as if they were old classics. A few houses away lives the man behind the works, the artist Zigge Holmgren. Open the gate and ring the bell, for inside the house he has his studio. Want to see how you could get out of Girl with a Pearl Earring, or Gustavus III - tickets at www.post-art.se.

Many of Visby's shops are open even though the season is. Enough that they are not numerous, but it also applies to customers, so you avoid the crowd when you buy sweets and tea caddy on Kränku, furnishings and utensils of Acanthus Gad (all located in St. His plan and Hästgatan) and nyhamrade silver necklace with Sophie's Silver (St. Hansgatan 30).

It looks empty to the streets, but appearances are deceptive: Make sure to reserve a table for dinner at Bakfickan (0498-27 18 07). Same goes for lunch. The combination few tables and notoriously great seafood dishes make it impossible to fit this otherwise. Perhaps there is an open seat at the bar.

Saturday

Base with a hearty breakfast. Today, it is time to see some of the rest of the island. Rent a car capable of Mike's car rental (070-560 37 71) for 300 crowns the day, and steering towards the nearest fishing village. A walk along the beach with the salt, fresh wind in your face is a must.

The controversial Furillen is a reasonable amount of time outing. Photographer Johan Hellström bought the island by the military and built on an old lime factory to the hotel and restaurant, and plans are many. Guests will long to live, work and confer. Call to hear about the site is subscribed (0498-22 30 40). One option is to stay in Valleviken on the road to eat simple but good on Sjökrogen (0498-22 30 15).

Gotland restaurants are concentrated in Visby and the residents from entering the island in order to lubricate the gizzard. Book a table again then. Both Donner well, Old Masters and 50 squares belong to the association Culinary Gotland. Surfers (0498-27 87 02) with links to half flight plus farm breathing backpacker-place, and do you feel really good and hot chinese jaw and a few beers, it is the right place for you.

Sunday

Leave the bags at the hotel and just enjoy the last few hours of calm. Three good places for a light and a good lunch is Crêpe (charming, Waller location) Wisby deli (new and relaxed, Southern kyrkogatan) and Freedom (elegant, Wisby Hotel).

Now a guided tour would be nice, but you must isåfall be booked via the tourist office since former (0498-20 17 00). Two hours inc cost 1163 crowns. Hear about how the wall was built in the 1200s to protect against all the angry farmers, why it is so full of church ruins in Visby, and much more to think about during the flight home.

But before departure: visit Café yellow house (Tranhusgatan 2). Once a private residence, which may crack as additional public facilities. The owner Hans Lundberg is open on weekends throughout the winter at 12-17 and among the wooden chairs and nice small screens in the cute little living room offers both espresso and good homemade.
